Better memory better sales.

How often have you attended a networking event and you bump into someone you’ve met before and you cannot remember a thing about them?

Imagine the impact you could have on your business and your sales if you could walk into a networking event and recall the names of everyone you previously met?

This is the difference between a trained memory and an untrained memory

Take two salespeople selling a comparative service/product, similar features, benefits, price range. They both meet a potential client at a networking event. Two months later all three of them are attending the same conference. Each of the salespeople individually encounter the potential client. Salesperson 1 cannot remember the name of the potential client or where they previously met. Salesperson 2 not only remembers the potential clients name and where they met, but also their partners name who was introduced to them in their first meeting, they also recall they were a huge soccer fan and they were a die-hard Arsenal supporter …. who do you think gets the sale?

Salesperson 2 is not selling a superior product or service; they are selling a superior encounter. People do business with people they like, people they trust, trust builds relationships, relationships builds business.

Salespeople with a trained memory will always outperform salespeople without.

Our brains lie to us

Your brain doesn’t always tell you the truth, it often lies to you.

Answer this problem quickly.

A coffee and a cookie together cost $1.10. The coffee cost $1 more than the cookie. How much does the coffee cost?

Most people say $1, which is wrong.

The coffee costs $1.05 and the cookie 5¢.

Our brain often takes shortcuts based on how important it thinks accuracy is over speed. It usually opts for speed, giving rules of thumb too much consideration over straight logic.

This is evident when we make assumptions about someone based on how they are dressed and even how they speak.

By the way, if you know of a place that sells coffee and a cookie for $1.10…let me know!

Do we use only 10% of our Brain?

Ask the average person what percentage of our brain we use and the majority will say 10%, very few will say we use 100%, which would be the correct answer. Imaging methods have shown that even simple tasks produce activity throughout the whole brain.

So where did this 10% myth come from? It seems to be traced back to the American psychologist William James, who in his 1906 speech ‘The Energies of Men’ said:

“We make use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.”

He never actually stated a percentage, yet somehow along the way this ‘undeveloped potential’ was picked up and morphed into a percentage. One example is a 1929 ad that ran in The World Almanac, which read:

‘Scientists and psychologists tell us we only use 10 percent of our brain power’.

But it really took hold and was popularized in 1936 when American writer Lowell Thomas, in the preface to Dale Carnegies best seller How to Win Friends and Influence People, falsely stated that:

“Professor William James of Harvard used to say that the average man develops only ten percent of his latent mental ability.”

Then there was no stopping it. Fortunes and careers have been made over the years with self-help books tapping into this myth. Individuals involved with the paranormal have championed this ‘fact’ to explain the potential for psychic powers.

Even Uri Geller, remember him? He made a career out of convincing people he could bend metal with his mind. He claims in his book, Uri Geller Mind-Power Book:

“Most of us only use 10 percent of our brains if that.”

Having us believe that he has tapped into some, if not all of the remaining 90%.

Think about it logically, if big chunks of our brain were never used, then damaging them would have no effect on us.

Funny, unique and interactive in his entertaining conference keynotes and workshops, Bob Gray reveals the untapped potential in each of us.

If I asked you to go grocery shopping without writing a list, how would you attempt to remember it? Let’s say you needed:

Chicken

Eggs

Milk

Ketchup

Laundry Detergent

Toothpaste

Bread

Mushrooms

Lettuce

Peas

Most people would use rote memorization, constantly repeating the list over and over until they thought they had it, painful stuff. Here’s a better way, which shows the power of visual memory.

First memorize these rhyming objects:

1 = Bun

2 = Shoe

3 = Tree

4 = Door

5 = Hive

6 = Sticks

7 = Heaven

8 = Gate

9 = Wine

10 = Pen

Now I’d like you to link, in as crazy way as possible, the 10 item-shopping list, to these new images representing the numbers from 1-10. I’ll start you off with the first three.

Bun to Chicken. See a gigantic Chicken sitting between the two halves of a hamburger bun, perhaps wearing the top half as a hat, see it pecking at the bottom half and the top half keeps falling off, so it keeps picking it up and placing it back on its head.

Shoe to Eggs. Imagine yourself cracking eggs into your favorite shoes. See yourself sliding your feet into your shoes and breaking the yolks. They spray out from your shoes covering the whole area with a thick yellow gooey mess.

Tree to Milk. Imagine tipping over a huge Oak tree with your hands, as it topples, gallons and gallons of Milk gush from the ground like an oil geyser. It’s a milk geyser. See yourself covered in dripping milk.

Okay, go ahead and do the same with the remaining list. Remember, the more ridiculous the image the better. Once you finish, see how many you can remember. Then come back.

So how did you do? If your images were crazy, you should not only have been able to remember all ten in order, but you should also be able to recall them out of order. If I say 3, what do you see? 3/Tree, uprooting the tree and the geyser of milk. How about 5, 8, 7? Easy isn’t it?

This is an easy demonstration of the power of visualization. The next time you go grocery shopping or go to write down a to-do list, try this method, your brain will thank you.

Never forget a name again.

In almost 30 years of delivering memory enhancement keynotes and workshops, without a doubt the number one issue I hear over and over again is remembering names, or rather the inability to recall someone’s name. I have a 90-minute keynote covering just this issue. We don’t have ninety minutes right now, so here’s an incredibly powerful technique to help overcome this problem.

I have said many times that all memory systems are based on associating an image of what you wish to remember, to an image of something you already know, a memory that you have already stored, and have instant access to. So when it comes to names, you already have access to images related to hundreds of common names. These can be images of famous people or people you already know. If I asked you to think of the names Donald or Hillary, whom do you think of? Of course Donald Duck and Sir Edmond Hillary…….no, you think of the politicians? Okay, let’s use them then.

This is how it works. When you are introduced to someone who shares the same first name as someone famous, or someone you know, you must quickly think of something about that famous person (or the person you know) which instantly reminds you of him or her, whether it’s a location, an action or something about him or her which stands out to you.

So you’ve just been introduced to someone named Donald, you immediately conjure up an image of Donald Trump, you now pick something about Donald Trump which reminds you of him, something which stands out, perhaps his hair, an image of a WALL, maybe Trump Tower in Manhattan, any number of things will work fine.

Here’s the powerful technique. You must now see this person, who you’ve just been introduced to, with a head of hair exactly like The Donald; of course you have to do this without laughing! Or you could imagine this guy sitting astride the top of Trump Tower (ridiculous images are ALWAYS stronger). Or you could imagine this guy literally building a brick WALL in the exact spot you are introduced to him.

When you next bump into this guy, your brain will do all the work for you, it will instantly recognize him with Donald Trumps hair, or see him building a wall and you will IMMEDIATELY recall his name.

If you meet a Hillary, you can picture her ignoring you while she’s checking her emails on her phone, or picture her giving a speech behind a lectern.

Here’s a real life example. I recently took an elevator ride in a hotel to give a speech. On the way down a guy in the elevator noticed my name badge and recognized me from the conference brochure. He introduced himself, his name was Roger, I immediately thought of Roger Federer and imagined him serving tennis balls inside the elevator. He came up to me after my presentation and I instantly saw him with a huge tennis racquet in his hand, he was so flattered that I recalled his name.

And by the way, our brain is so powerful at recognizing images; you don’t have to worry that you might end up calling him Novak, Andy or Rafael.

Try it, practice it, you will be amazed at how incredibly strong this one technique is for remembering names.

And which wine glass is mine?

Last week after my keynote presentation, a young couple with their 7 or 8 year old daughter came up to me and asked if there was a ‘memory trick’ that would help their daughter, they said she was dyslexic and kept mixing up the letters ‘b’ and ‘d’.

Although I’ve been asked many times if I was in fact dyslexic, because of the backwards upside down writing demonstration I give, (see demo video) this was the first time I was asked this question about someone else.

I asked the young girl to touch her forefingers and thumbs together in the universal ‘OK’ sign, as above. I told her that she had just made both the ‘b’ and the ‘d’ letters with her hands. I then asked her what comes first, ‘b’reakfast or ‘d’inner? She immediately said breakfast. I then asked her which hand is first, she held up her left. I told her, there’s your ‘b’, and dinner is later, so there’s your ‘d’, and I held up her right.

I have no idea if this will help with her dyslexia, and I asked her parents to let me know. I have a feeling it might, because as they walked away the young girl turned back at me with a huge smile, held up her right hand and gave me the OK sign.

By the way, you can also use this if you’re sat at a tightly packed dinner table full of glasses and plates, and you’re not sure which is your bread plate or which is your wine and/or water glass. Hold your hands the same way, and the ‘b’ stands for bread, and the ‘d’ stands for drink, so the small plate to your left is the bread plate, and the glasses to your right are your ‘drink’ glasses.
